Vibrant Colors & Vivid Patterns

Hawaiian quilts have historically drawn their inspiration from natural forms on the island. Many designs are based on the leaf designs of specific plants for example.
The colors are usually bright colors found in nature. Blues, Greens, Gold, Reds, and Purples are the most common colors used. In the mid 1800’s when this technique and style was developed, fabric resources were very limited.

Hawaiian Style Quilts

Quilting began in the Hawaiian islands with the arrival of missionaries and Western fabrics in the 1820s. Hawaiian quilt applique tops are made from a single cut on folded fabric. These two fabrics are then stitched together by hand using needle turn applique techniques.
Once the quilt top is completed it is then matched with a backing fabric, and a quilt batting and long arm stitch these 4 layers of fabric into its unique Hawaiian style quilt ready to be loved for generations to come.
